What is a Vintage Computer?

You would think that this is a simple question, but in truth, this is the most controversial issue among vintage computer enthusiasts. Vintage, it seems is in the eye of the beholder. Like obscenity, everyone knows it when they see it, but few seem to agree on exactly how old or what characteristics make a computer "vintage".

Most assuredly a vintage computer is not new. Some key criteria:

• Obsolete but significant technology
• No longer supported

Factors some people consider important (but may not admit):

• A machine they used as a kid
• A machine they used early in their career

Some absolutely positive signs a computer is vintage:

• In has vacuum tubes or discrete transistors.
• The manufacturing process involved hand soldering.
• Individual cabinets weigh more than a ton.
• The working memory involves magnetism in little donuts.
